An illustrated history of tattooing in Japan. Rare illustrations of Edo-era tattoos are collected along with excerpts from texts mentioning tattooing. The final chapters detail the various tattoos carried out by police throughout Japan, as well as specific police reports on the crime and subsequent tattooing. Includes chapters on: Prehistoric tattoos, early Japanese texts, Ainu tattoo traditions, tattoos in the Ryukyu Islands, severed head tattoos, tattoo instruments and punishment tattoos. Translations of official Edo-era police documents give specific examples of when and why criminals were tattooed. Many of these sources are available in English for the first time. This book is part of an ongoing series examining tattoo traditions in Japan.
