Of Bandits and Brave: The Heroes of Kuniyoshi's Suikoden is the first monograph in English on the impressive series of 74 prints illustrating Suikoden figures by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), one of Japan's outstanding 19th-century masters of woodblock printing.
Of Bandits and Brave Men is a full-colour reproduction of all 74 known designs in the series, each accompanied by an explanatory text. The publication also provides supplementary information on topics specifically related to the series, such as tattooing: several of the Suikoden figures are adorned with tattoos, and Kuniyoshi himself is believed to have had a passion for this art. In addition, Kuniyoshi's illustration of a variety of types of armour and clothing, his sometimes graphic depiction of heroes in battle and his integration of Western stylistic devices are testament to the creative genius behind the Suikoden series.
