"Berber Tattoo" is a unique and tender record of tribal skin art from the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The result of a series of chance encounters, Felix and Loretta Leu's 1988 road trip opened a door into the intimate world of Berber tribal women. In this book, the women tell their individual stories, revealing the traditions of tattooing in their culture, along with insights into the lives they led.
Sensitively captured in drawings from the period, by Aia Leu, the faces of the Berber women speak of a tribal culture that was fast disappearing, even then. As tattoo artists, Felix and Loretta were able to find common ground with Berber families, gaining unprecedented access to this little-documented Berber art form.
This unpublished workbook, collected almost thirty years ago, is a tribute to the art of tattooing, tradition, family and love.
By Aia Leu.
