Nicknamed "the Raphael of flowers", he was a favourite of wealthy Parisian patrons, including Napoleon's wife, Josephine, and to this day is considered a master of botanical illustration.

H. Walter Lack is professor at the Free University of Berlin and former director of the Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem.
