-Synopsis

The complete series Taiheiki eiyūden (1867) - Heroes of the Great Pacification - by Utagawa Yoshiiku (1833-1904) consists of 100 pictures of heroic warriors of Japanese history, men worthy of admiration in victory and defeat, in triumph and failure. They are the one hundred main protagonists of the Sengoku period (late 15th - late 16th century), a turbulent period of civil wars, bloody battles and the constant presence of death. They are also the hundred architects of the unification of Japan under the Tokugawa government and of the long and stable Edo period (1603-1867).
