A journey back in time to early 20th-century Japan

The Golden Age of Travel coincides squarely with the reign of the Meiji emperor, which began in 1868 with the overthrow of the feudal order that had kept Japan isolated from the outside world for more than 200 years. Over the next four and a half decades, Japan became less remote and more attractive to the international traveller, and a popular subject for photographers, both Japanese and foreign.
